TAMPA, Fla. (970 WFLA) - Saying she is deeply disappointed, Tampa Police Chief Jane Castor has announced she has fired two of her officers.
In the first case, Detective Jenette Hevel was arrested and charged with grand theft. She's accused of stealing fraudulent IRS money orders that had been confiscated during an IRS sting operation and cashing them in, herself.
In the other case, Sgt. Ray Fernandez has been shown the door for his involvement in the DUI arrest of Tampa attorney Phil Campbell earlier this year, one that a special prosecutor determined was a set-up by a rival law firm.
Castor says Fernandez conspired with a friend who worked for that law firm. She says Fernandez later lied to investigators about his contact with his friend and even erased 92 text messages between the two prior to Campbell's arrest.
Campbell was arrested outside a Tampa restaurant as he was moving a car that belonged to another woman he met inside. She turned out to be a paralegal with that rival law firm. DUI charges were eventually dropped.
The FBI continues to investigate the case, but Castor said she didn't want to wait for the conclusion before taking action against Fernandez.
