TAMPA, Fla. (970 WFLA) - Tampa Police are investigating a car that crashed into a retirement home building in the Hyde Park neighborhood.

The driver, who’s been identified as 28-year-old Rico Antwan Jones of Clearwater, has minor injuries and faces charges of driving under the influence, leaving the scene of a crash with  property damage, fleeing, driving with a suspended license.

While on patrol, police say a DUI officer saw the driver of a red mustang traveling the wrong way on Howard Avenue around 2:40 a.m. The officer activated his emergency lights to pull the driver over but the driver took off.

Police say the officer deactivated his emergency equipment and did not follow the suspect per department policy. However, several minutes later, a call came in that a red mustang hit the building at 215 Grand Central Place. Officers arriving on scene say they observed Rico Jones, walking away from the crash.

Tampa Fire Rescue extinguished the vehicle flames. Jones received minor injuries and was transported to Tampa General Hospital for treatment. He since has been booked into the Orient Road Jail.
