This weekend is the unofficial start to summer, and it's time for the Top 10 Beach List. Stephen Leatherman, otherwise known as Dr. Beach, has named Main Beach in East Hampton, New York number 1. Leatherman tells the Associated Press that people in the Hamptons are proud of their beaches. They pick up litter, the bathrooms are clean and they provide good services at Main Beach. Some people may be surprised by the pick because of Superstorm Sandy, but Main Beach did not sustain the erosion and damage like the beaches farther west in New Jersey.
Three Florida beaches made the list this year.
1.Main Beach, East Hampton, New York
2.Kahanamoku Beach, Waikiki, Hawaii
3.St. George Island, Florida
4.Hamoa Beach, Maui, Hawaii
5.Waimanalo Bay State Park, Oahu, Hawaii
6.Barefoot Beach Preserve County Park, Bonita Springs, Florida
7.Cape Florida State Park, Key Biscayne, Florida
8.Cape Hatteras, Outer Banks, North Carolina
9.Coast Guard Beach, Cape Cod, Massachusetts
10.Beachwalker Park, Kiawah Island, South Carolina
Once a beach reaches number one it is retired from future consideration. Coronado Beach in California earned the top spot in 2012. Siesta Beach in Sarasota took number one in 2011.
