TAMPA, Fla. (970 WFLA) - Tampa Police Chief Jane Castor fired another one of her officers--this time, for welfare fraud and grand theft.
Sgt. La Joyce Houston was terminated after detectives determined she had used a friend's food stamp benefit card for mutual gain. That friend is already jailed and has an extensive criminal record.
Castor said Houston bought $365 in food from a local Walmart using that card.
Houston's husband is a detective with TPD, but Castor doesn't believe he had any knowledge of the fraud case.
"She has betrayed the community, the men and women of the Tampa Police Department and everything that our agency stands for," said Castor.
This is the third Tampa officer fired in as many weeks. One officer was recently terminated and charged with IRS fraud and another for his involvement in a controversial DUI arrest.
